The Pentastar is a more reliable platform than the outgoing Powertech 3.7L with losing cylinder pressure around 150k miles. Any drive train component that is composite, plastic or rubber should be expected to be replaced within 20 years putting a hard date on most modern engines as it is an intense repair.
B09 FSAR-TSB-5485 I had seen statements suggesting that the Pentastars made in the Saltillo plant were more prone to this and head gasket problems but have not seen any actual proof, so maybe it's a supplier issue. It's a lot of model years that are affected....
The Pentastar's simplicity, and instant recognition is what grabbed me. I cringed, though, when it began being used prominently on all Chrysler's cars, rather than remaining a corporate symbol, and allowing each make to have it's own logo.
The underlying cause is overheating of the valve seats on cylinder #2. Fiat-Chrysler resolved the issue in mid-2013 with hardened valve guides and seats. The pentastar signified the corp and not the brand, so you knew it was a Chrysler product and the name of the car was on the car so you knew what it was. I thought it was neat because you knew what it was just by the pentastar. For a few years GM had a emblem on the bottom of the fender with the GM on it.
