Kinte Mitchell Jr Verdict

In retelling the Kinte story, Fofana changed crucial details, including his father's name, his brothers' names, his age, and even omitted the year when he went missing. At one point, he even placed Kunta Kinte in a generation that was alive in the twentieth century.

Haley believed one of those survivors was a seventeen-year-old Kunta Kinte. The Africans were sold into slavery on October 7, according to an advertisement in the Maryland Gazette newspaper. Kinte would have been purchased at the ship or in one of the local inns or restaurants.

The story of Kunta Kinte, as Haley tells it in Roots, begins with his birth in 1750 in Juffure, Gambia. He is captured as a teenager by slave traders and makes the terrible journey on a slave ship to the United States.
