Discussion on NYU Stern's reputation, prestige, and value for a finance major considering its cost and Wall Street recognition.
Prestige seeking is annoying and takes away the fun of going to college. If you’re a young reader and you really want to be an IMO/IBO medalist etc. don’t waste hours of youth with your face in a biology book if all you care about is prestige and looking good.
Yes, the prestige of U Chicago will matter for law school admissions and even during your career as a lawyer. Given your situation, however, you should probably lean toward your state school option unless there is a 3rd choice not being mentioned in the post.
Out of SSP, NYSCamp, UCD YSP, CMU SAMS, and HSHSP, what would you chose based on prestige?
Which program would you chose based on prestige? (SSP, NYSCamp, UCD YSP ...
I actually had to look up the rankings of the three colleges because I wasn’t aware that Brandeis was substantially more prestigious than the other two. In general I’d say prestige is never worth going into lots of debt for.
I don’t think you need to break the prestige mindset- as long as you aren’t defining prestige by “appears in the top ten of a magazine which publishes these listings to sell more magazines”. Identify what YOU are looking for in a college. Want a rigorous program in mechanical engineering? Yes, MIT and Cal Tech are prestigious.
I agree with @nichaeluwill. Also I don’t think prestige is necessarily the best criterion for anything. Are you doing a summer program in order to enhance chances for admission to college? I don’t think you need to. And if genuine interest is your reason for going, that’s great, but “fit” is most important, not prestige.
