I agree with Suzanne that you need to follow the directions in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. Then, to apply any numbering to a paragraph, apply the style, do not use the numbering buttons on the Home tab. I would also recommend looking at Suzanne's page on indenting numbering: Number Alignment 2007 and later by Suzanne Barnhill ...
See Page Numbering by Greg Maxey for more about calulated Page fields. The same process could be used for section numbering. Note that you may have multiple Word sections within a Chapter (a logical section). I agree with Stefan and Suzanne that you are likely going to have an easier time of it using multilevel numbering and the StyleRef Field.
